Check-in Crew

Volunteers Needed:  3 per time slot
Date:  Thursday
Time Commitment:  4-5 hours per time slot – you may volunteer for multiple times and jobs over the weekend as long as times don’t interfere (please do!)
Explanation:  GOMR Teams will send at least one person from their team to load into GOMR Village on Thursday. They could send one person, or the whole team (up to 12) could come. They will drive to campus, check in, drop off their gear, take their personal vehicles to an off-site parking facility, then be shuttled back to campus, where they will spend the evening setting up their campsite and relaxing.

Please be courteous and respectful to the teams that are spending their money and their time at our event and in our county.
Job:  Give a warm welcome to arriving teams, get teams checked in, collect outstanding money owed (credit card system will be set up), and give teams their goodie bags, T-shirts, directions to camping area, and provide parking instructions and map to off-site parking facilities

Please contact Donny McCall if you have any questions or concerns at 336-363-4984 or contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.

Check-in Shuttle Crew

Volunteers needed:  2 people per time slot.
Date:  Thursday
Time commitment:  5 hours per time slot – you may volunteer for multiple times and jobs over the weekend as long as times don’t interfere (please do!)

Job:  Registration Shuttle Crew volunteers will oversee shuttling Gomers back to GOMR Nation from the off-site parking facilities.  If we get the number of teams we hope to get, and if every Gomer drives themselves, we will have to park at a few different facilities.  If that is the case, we will color code the facilities, so when we send the team out to go park, we will know where to shuttle them back to at the completion of the weekend.

Please contact Donny McCall if you have any questions or concerns at 336-363-4984 or contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.

Route/Sign Set-up Crew

Volunteers needed:  3 people.  Driver and two sign placers.
Date:  Thursday
Time commitment:  Approximately 7 hours – you may volunteer for multiple times and jobs over the weekend as long as times don’t interfere (please do!)
Job:  Drive GOMR Route placing Caution RunnerDirectional, and Exchange signs.
Explanation:  Driver must be at least 25 years old with a valid driver’s license.  Crew will be provided with a vehicle, headlamps, safety vests, route map, and locations to place each sign.  Safety vests are to be worn by entire crew the whole time.  Headlamps are to be worn by the sign placers between 7:00PM and 7:00AM.  Caution Runner signs will be placed on roads that bisect with GOMR Route, and also intermittently along GOMR Route, when route is on one road for more than two miles.  Directional signs will be placed along the GOMR Route.  One sign will be placed prior to a turn from one road to another.  An additional sign will be placed on the newly turned on road within 50 yards as a confirmation for the runners.  Exchange Ahead signs will be placed approximately 1/4 mile prior to each Exchange so runners can prepare to pass the baton.  Exchange signs with directional arrows will be placed at the Exchange, or at the turn immediately prior to the Exchange.

Please contact Donny McCall if you have any questions or concerns at 336-363-4984 or contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.

Route/Sign Clean-up Crew

Volunteers Needed:  3 people: 1 driver, 2 sign retrievers
Date:  Saturday
Time Commitment:  Approximately 5 hours – you may volunteer for multiple times and jobs over the weekend as long as times don’t interfere (please do!)
Job:      Drive GOMR Route picking up CautionDirectional, and Exchange signs, and any debris obviously left by relay participants.
Explanation:  Driver must be at least 25 years old with a valid driver’s license.  Crew will be provided with a vehicle, safety vests, route map, and locations to retrieve each sign. Safety vests are to be worn by the entire crew for the whole time. Crew will also take a trash bag with them. Runners are asked not to litter along the course. However, we are asking that if they must throw down trash, that it be close to one of our signs. Therefore, please also pick up any trash related to GOMR that you see. And any other trash that you would like to.  DirectionalExchange, and some Caution Runner signs will be along the route. Other Caution Runner signs will be off the GOMR route and on roads that bisect the route.  If the crew is very efficient and begins to catch up to GOMR runners, we ask that you quit picking up signs and go to the next Exchange. Race Officials at that Exchange will be able to tell you how many teams are still on the course. The course is to be supported with signs and personnel until 7:00pm Saturday. Wait at that Exchange and give enough time for the last teams to pass you and get several miles ahead before retracing that leg and retrieving those signs and moving ahead. If you can’t wait, return to GOMR Nation and see Head Gomer.

Please contact Donny McCall if you have any questions or concerns at 336-363-4984 or contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.

GOMR Village Helper

Volunteers Needed:  3+ people per time slot
Date:  Friday and Saturday
Time Commitment:  6 hours per time slot – you may volunteer for multiple times and jobs over the weekend as long as times don’t interfere (please do!)

Explanation/Job:  GOMR Nation will be open for up to 72 hours (Thursday – Sunday) to give runners (Gomers) a weekend they won’t forget. GOMR teams will start checking in GOMR Central (Alleghany Wellness Center) at noon on Thursday. The race will start at 5:00am Friday and run continuously until the last Gomer comes across the finish line around 5:00PM on Saturday. Teams are welcome to stay overnight Saturday night as well. However, if all teams decide to leave GOMR Nation after the race, we will break it down earlier (Saturday afternoon).
GOMR Nation Volunteers will be the hands and feet for the needs around GOMR Nation and will need to be the most flexible about their duties. You will need to be physically able to handle jobs like moving tables and carrying water, ice, and/or trash.  However, there are jobs that would require mostly sitting. The motto for these volunteers is “Send Me”. Duties will include, but are not limited to helping teams with their gear to the campsites, helping with setup of vendors, games, and entertainment as needed, collecting trash around campus and putting into dumpster, being a runner for messages or material as needed, making tons of coffee, manning an information desk, helping with registrations, and anything else needed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for participants, sponsors, and fellow volunteers. Sign-up will be in 6-hour blocks. Please sign up for multiple blocks and/or multiple days.

Please contact Donny McCall if you have any questions or concerns at 336-363-4984 or contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.

Exchange Shuttle Driver

Volunteers needed:  2 per time slot.  Some Exchanges may need additional Drivers and Shuttles for the cluster of runners during those times.
Date:  Friday and Saturday
Time commitment:  Approximately 5-6 hours per time slot – you may volunteer for multiple times and jobs over the weekend as long as times don’t interfere (please do!)
Job:  During your time slot, you will be driving out and back from GOMR Village to a particular Exchange (i.e., Exchange 12).  You will be driving out fresh runners and drop bags, dropping runners and drop bags off, then returning to GOMR Village with runners that have finished the previous leg.  You will drive out and back in 30-minute increments until you have brought the last runners coming into that Exchange back to GOMR Village.
Explanation:  Drivers must be at least 25 years old with a valid driver’s license.  Drivers will be provided a vehicle, Shuttle Route Map, flashlight, and training prior to GOMR.  Some snacks and drinks will be provided, but you may want to bring your own.  Runners will be placing a drop bag (food, water, towel, etc.) into your shuttle that the runner wants when they finish running their leg.  When the Driver reaches the Exchange to drop off Runners, they will need to leave the drop bags with the Exchange Official under the canopy/shelter.  Drivers will need to check in at GOMR Central at least 30 minutes prior to their assigned starting time.
Ideally, a church, civic group, non-profit, F3 and/or FiA group, or business would take ownership of an individual Exchange.  This means they would commit to providing the Drivers and Exchange Officials and coordinating the personnel to support one or more Exchanges while they are active.  If you have a group that is willing to commit to this ownership, contact me directly at contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.

Please contact Donny McCall if you have any questions or concerns at 336-363-4984 or contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.

Exchange Official

Volunteers needed:  2 per time slot – Minors are allowed to be Exchange Officials as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
Date:  Friday and Saturday
Time commitment:  Approximately 5-6 hours per time slot – you may volunteer for multiple times and jobs over the weekend as long as times don’t interfere (please do!)
Job:  Exchange Officials will be responsible for the setting up and breaking down of their Exchange, logging when a “passing of the baton” happens at the Exchange, and communicating the time and team information back to GOMR Central.

Explanation:  You will need a working cell phone to text information back to GOMR Central.  Exchanges will need to be set up and ready to receive runners at least 1/2 hour before the first active runners are scheduled to arrive.  The beginning times shown should be enough time to arrive and set up the Exchange before they do.  Two Exchange Officials are recommended per Exchange.  Though one person may be able to do it, having a second person is beneficial in helping spot runners coming in, covering for a quick bathroom break, and keeping the Exchange area safe.  Set up material will be one pop-up canopy provided.  Bring a comfortable chair, snacks and drinks.  A Port-A-John, or access to the Exchange building’s bathroom will be provided.  Please be respectful to the runners.  Mostly, they will know to stay out of the way and warm up safely.  But the runners should heed any reasonable request you give them.  Please let us know the team bib number if there is a situation that warrants a warning or disqualification.

Exchange Officials will have a great responsibility for the safety of the runners.  Safety points at the Exchanges include:

  • Being aware when shuttles are entering and leaving and making sure runners are also aware.
  • Recognizing if a runner looks in trouble (sick, cramped up, etc.) when coming in and being prepared to call 911 if necessary.
  • Keeping the Exchange Chute clear for incoming and outgoing runners to exchange cleanly.

Be aware the Drivers will be bringing runners and “drop bags” to the Exchanges. Drop bags are water, food, towels, etc. the runners want there when they’ve finished their leg. Please be aware of this and make sure to ask the Driver if they have drop bags (if they don’t automatically unload them).
Ideally, a church, civic group, non-profit, F3 and/or FiA group, or business would take ownership of an individual Exchange. Meaning, they would commit to providing the Drivers and Exchange Officials and coordinating the personnel to support one or more Exchanges while they are active. If you have a group that is willing to commit to this ownership, contact me directly at contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.

Please contact Donny McCall if you have any questions or concerns at 336-363-4984 or contact@getoutsidemountainrelay.com.
